Introduction
Basilica of Our Lady, Beaune, France is one of the last great Romanesque churches in Burgundy. Its construction was undertaken in the middle of the 12th century on the Clunisian model and was completed at the beginning of the following century, preserving a remarkable stylistic unity. It is polychrome but carved in fruit wood which has darkened over time. Nevertheless, it is with fervour and devotion that the medieval Beaunois went in procession with the Virgin during the plague epidemics that lasted until the 16th century.
The canons began building the building in the middle of the 12th century and the construction, from east to west, was not completed until the beginning of the 13th century . The canonical buildings date from the end of the 12th century, the porch from the middle of the 13th century .
After the fire of 1272, work was undertaken; the upper parts of the apse were rebuilt at the level of the blind arcade : the Romanesque windows were replaced by immense Gothic windows with tracery and flying buttresses established on the Romanesque buttresses of theambulatory ; the cornices and windows of the ambulatory were reworked, the roofs and the tower of the transept modified.
The chapels were added from the 13th century to the 16th century ; tea most notable are the Saint-Léger chapel decorated with murals and the chapel of Canon Bouton built between 1529 and 1533. The Gothic spire of the church was replaced by an imperial roof built from 1580 to 1588, based on plans by Hugues Sambin .
The Revolution destroyed the statuary of the portal and a large part of the liturgical furniture. A fragment of the Romanesque altar was found in 1843, and is now exhibited in the church.
In 1844, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc drew up a restoration estimate; the work was carried out from 1860 under the direction of Maurice Ouradou , with the Beaune architect Alphonse Forest as inspector of the works. The work focused particularly on the exteriors; the eight flying buttresses of the crossing tower were destroyed on this occasion. The crowning of the western parts was resumed in 1886, reinventing all of its sculpted ornaments in the process.
Architectural Style: Romanesque Architecture
The church includes a nave with two aisles, a transept and a choir with an apse, ambulatory and radiating chapels . The nave, transept and choir are covered with pointed barrel vaults, the aisles and ambulatory with groin vaults, the porch, apse, chapels, cloister and chapter house with ribbed vaults, the Bouton chapel with a ceiling.
Around 1690, Gabriel Revel produced The Adoration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus 3 , an oil on canvas measuring 243 × 223 cm .
Interior
Inside it is a large, rather plain church with a long tall nave with fluted pillars, a small triforium above, and plain glass clerestory windows. But this plainness hides many treasures.
Just behind the altar and surrounding the choir stalls, you can admire a collection of five well-preserved Flemish tapestries (approx. 6×2 metres each). They date back to the 15th century and tell the story, in nineteen scenes, of the life of the Virgin Mary.
This year (2021), viewing the tapestries is free of charge in the collegiate choir between May 20 and October 31, excluding lunch hour (1-2 pm) and religious services.
Organs
The building has a large organ, which is among the most beautiful in Burgundy. The instrument, which dates from the17th century and has been modified several times, has a painted and sculpted case, four keyboards, a pedal board and around fifty stops. Its holder has been, since 1976, the organist Michel Tissier.
Convent Complex
To the left of the choir is the oldsacristy, to the right, upstairs, the old Saint-Michel chapel (private oratory ofNicolas Rolin) whose apse, lit by a semi-circular window, is supported by acorbeland covered by a terrace bordered by a balustrade. A corridor provided communication with the canonical building. The portal of the right arm of the transept opens onto a seven-bay cloister gallery surmounted by a part of the old canonical buildings, currently used asa presbytery.
