Introduction
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta serves as the cathedral of Pesaro, a historic city located on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It is the central place of worship and the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Pesaro, which encompasses the surrounding area. This church holds the prestigious honorific title of Minor Basilica, a distinction granted by the Vatican in recognition of its significance in both religious and cultural terms.
In addition to its role as the cathedral, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is also the seat of a parish within the archdiocese. This parish is part of Vicariate I – San Terenzio, which is one of the organizational districts of the Archdiocese of Pesaro. The church plays a central role in the religious life of the local community, offering a place for regular worship, sacraments, and various religious services.
Ancient Origins and Early Christian Churches
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Pesaro has ancient roots, with evidence of two early Christian churches that once stood on the site. The first church dates back to the 4th century, while the second, built in the 6th century, replaced the original after it was destroyed during the Gothic Wars (535-553 AD). This dual-layer of mosaic decoration attests to the church’s long and rich history.
Becoming the Cathedral and Contributions from the Malatesta and Sforza Families
In the 7th century, the church was elevated to the status of a cathedral, becoming the seat of the bishop. This shift coincided with the transfer of the relics of Saint Terenzio, the patron saint of Pesaro, to the church. The church was further enriched by the Malatesta and Sforza families. Blessed Serafina Sforza, wife of the Lord of Pesaro, Alessandro Sforza, is venerated here, and her incorrupt body was laid to rest in the cathedral.
Baroque Reconstruction, Neoclassical Redesign, and Napoleonic Plunder
The church was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 17th century, resulting in the destruction of the apse, bell tower, baptistery, and porticoed atrium. It was consecrated to Maria Assunta in 1663. Later, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the interior was redesigned in neoclassical style by architects Giovanni Battista Carducci and Luigi Galli, shaping the church’s current appearance. During the French occupation under Napoleon, many artworks were looted from the church. Of the seven works cataloged as having been taken to France in 1796, only three returned, including Caravaggio’s “Annunciation,” which was originally dedicated to the cathedral but now resides in the Museum of Nancy.

Right Nave: The Chapel of San Terenzio, which houses the relics of the saint and other patron saints of the city, as well as a 14th-century fresco of the Madonna del Popolo.
Left Nave: The Chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento, both chapels reflecting renovations from the 19th-20th centuries.
Above the entrance door is a canvas by Marco Benefial (18th century), depicting the Assumption of the Virgin among saints. In the left transept, a canvas by Giovanni Giacomo Pandolfi (17th century) illustrates the Crucifixion with Saints.
Presbytery and Artistic Features
The presbytery area is home to several artistic treasures, including:
- A fresco of the Madonna della Misericordia (15th century).
- The Chapel of the Crucifix, which houses a wooden crucifix from the 15th century and the tombs of local bishops.
- The Apse, a modern work decorated with frescoes and stained glass windows installed in 1950, representing the patron saints of the city: Serafina Sforza, Decenzio, Terenzio, Eracliano, and Felicia Meda.
- A 15th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Jerome, recently (2000) attributed to the school of Giovanni Santi.
Pipe Organ and Mosaics
The church is also home to a Mascioni Opus 914 pipe organ, built in 1970, featuring 45 registers on three manuals and pedal with electric transmission.
Finally, the mosaics discovered beneath the church floor in the second half of the 19th century are of historical and artistic significance.
